چکیده

Sodium alkyl sulfate micelles are predicted to grow as a power law of the total counterion salt concentration, Yaq, in the aqueous phase as follows: NA = K~(Y~~)Y, where N A is the micelle aggregation number and ~2 and y are constants which are estimated from the critical micelle concentration and the apparent degree of counterion attachment. For sodium dodecyl sulfate, NA = 162(Y,q)1/4 is predicted and is shown to be in good agreement with aggregation numbers measured by a number of techniques over a wide range of Yaq whether this quantity is varied by changing the concentrations of the detergent, the added counterion salt, or both. Values of ~2 and y are estimated for six members of the sodium alkyl sulfate family.

The interaction of a cationic detergent with bovine serum albumin and other proteins.

The binding of tetradecyltrimethylammonium chloride to bovine serum albumin and several other globular proteins was measured, and the resulting conformational changes were studied by optical and hydrodynamic techniques. Native serum albumin was found to have four discrete binding sites for the detergent, to which binding occurs without conformational change, and with a much lower binding consta...

Phospholipid containing mixed micelles. Characterization of diheptanoyl phosphatidylcholine (DHPC) and sodium dodecyl sulfate and DHPC and dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide.

Mixed micelles of l,2-diheptanoyl-sn-grycero-3-phosphocholine (DHPC) with ionic detergents were prepared to develop well characterized substrates for the study of lipolytic enzymes. The aggregates that formed on mixing DHPC with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and with the positively charged dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) were investigated using time-resolved fluor...

Combining precision spin-probe partitioning with time-resolved fluorescence quenching to study micelles. Application to micelles of pure lysomyristoylphosphatidylcholine (LMPC) and LMPC mixed with sodium dodecyl sulfate.

Micelles of lysomyristoylphosphatidylcholine (LMPC) and mixed micelles of LMPC with anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) have been characterized by spin-probe-partitioning electron paramagnetic resonance (SPPEPR) and time-resolved fluorescence quenching (TRFQ) experiments. SPPEPR is a novel new method to study structure and dynamics in lipid assemblies successfully applied here for th...

Surfactant- and Salt-Induced Growth of Normal Sodium Alkyl Sulfate Micelles Well above Their Critical Micelle Concentrations

Time-resolved fluorescence quenching measurements were performed on normal sodium alkyl sulfate micelles, well above their critical micelle concentrations, to determine the functional dependence of the aggregation number on the detergent and added common counterion concentrations. Six members of the sodium alkyl sulfate family with different alkyl chain lengths including octyl, nonyl, decyl, un...

Synergistic sphere-to-rod micelle transition in mixed solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate and cocoamidopropyl betaine.

Static and dynamic light scattering experiments show that the mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cocoamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) undergo a sphere-to-rod transition at unexpectedly low total surfactant concentrations, about 10 mM. The lowest transition concentration is observed at molar fraction 0.8 of CAPB in the surfactant mixture. The transition brings about a sharp increase in...
